Joséphine Baker - château Milandes

Josephine Baker, an exceptional lady!

Walk in the footsteps of Josephine Baker, American music-hall singer and dancer, first black woman to become internationally famous and discover where she lived: the château des Milandes in the Dordogne, 16 km south of Sarlat.

Joséphine Baker, l'histoire de Cendrillon

Josephine Baker and the château des Milandes - Castelnaud-la-Chapelle.

Josephine Baker did two things after buying the château des Milandes in 1947. She created indoor and outdoor theatrical sets to produce shows for her friends and set up the first theme park in the region. A lady out of the ordinary, she was close to Martin Luther King in her struggle for Civil Rights and devoted much of her time and energy to fighting against all kinds of discrimination.

In her 'spare' time she adopted twelve children with nine different nationalities and became totally dedicated to her "rainbow tribe". Extremely generous, she invested her entire fortune in the château. However the theme park fast became a financial drain and in 1968 she was evicted. She died in Paris in 1975.

Today the spirit of Josephine Baker lives on in Milandes where the château has become a museum dedicated to Josephine. Photographs, documents, furniture and stage costumes are on display, including the famous banana belt. Audio recordings lead you from room to room, recreating the story of her life in the castle she loved so much. Built in 1489, the house is a fine example of Renaissance architecture with magnificent gothic features.

Beautiful French gardens surround the château and just below it is an interesting show of birds of prey. Also on site: workshops for kids, shop, brasserie/restaurant open from March to November.

Village de Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère

25km north of Sarlat between Les Eyzies and Lascaux, Saint Léon sur Vézère lies, as its name suggests, in a bend in the Vézère river.
Classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, the village has the charming medieval heritage of the Périgord Noir.
A maze of couredoux (narrow streets), white stone houses with warm stone roofs and monuments which give it character.
Among them,
-Saint Léonce Roman church from the 12th century, listed as an historic monument which hosts concerts for the Périgord Noir Music Festival in summer
-the 16th century Clérans Château in a park planted with hundred year old trees
-the Manoir de la Salle built in the 14th century
-the 16th century expiatory chapel with its 13th century recesses
The town also has three prehistoric deposits, Sous le Roc, le Moustier and la Rochette.

La Roque Saint-Christophe - Fort et Cité troglodytiques

Between Les Eyzies and Montignac, the cliff of the Roque Saint-Christophe rises steeply above the Vézère River. This kilometre-long, 80-metre-high limestone cliff has been sculpted with under-rock shelters and long aerial terraces with impressive overhangs, occupied by man in prehistoric times (55,000 years ago),then modified to become a fort and a city in the Middle Ages, and inhabited until the early Renaissance.
Few troglodytic sites can rival the Roque Saint-Christophe in terms of age and surface area. Discover the lives and dwellings of our ancestors, the 15th century city and a collection of medieval lifting machines. Highlights of the visit: the arrival on the Grande Terrasse, offering an exceptional view of the Vézère valley, and prehistory workshops open to all (painting, fire lighting, flint knapping...).

Château de Losse

5 Km from Montignac Lascaux on D 706. The Medieval stronghold towers above the river Vézère. Within its curtain walls and deep moat a Renaissance hall was built in 1576. It is accessed by a monumental gatehouse where an inscription proclaims, in the line of 16th century thought, « Man does as he may, Fate as she wills ».

Inside the Renaissance hall a fine decor and exceptional period furniture bear witness to the grand lifestyle of Jean II de Losse, soldier and courtier of all the sons of Catherine de Medicis, the last Valois kings. The gardens within the walls or terraced over the river with plantations following the 16th century lay out, offer an inspired and charming wandering with unspoiled views over the virgilian coutryside. (« A » listed building, site and gardens.)
