Nothing’s ever forgotten when it comes to organizing a traditional Basque celebration. The scene first of all, with green and orange-coloured half-timbered houses overlooking the lush mountain slopes. The atmosphere, of course, with bandas (street fanfares), concerts with men’s choirs, demonstrations of Basque dancing and Basque pelota. And, local products, pepper obviously as well as cheese and cold meat cuts.
And, amongst the highlights of the festivities:
- Solemn Mass with the Espelette choir, the blessing of the peppers followed by the parade of the ‘confréries’ (brotherhoods) through the streets;
- the induction ceremony for new members of the Confrérie du Piment et du Axoa de Veau of Espelette and the 2019 pepper awards ceremony;
- ‘makilaris’ shows (drum majors twirling ‘makilas’, traditional Basque batons).
And, of course, everything that makes a celebration a great convivial get-together: the farmers’ and craftspeople’s market, the aperitif-concerts in the town’s bars, the gastronomic meals in the restaurants!
