La Flow Vélo Châteauneuf-sur-Charente - Jarnac - Cognac

CHATEAUNEUF-SUR-CHARENTE - JARNAC - COGNAC

Start: in Châteauneuf / Charente

Arrival: Jarnac / Cognac

Time: 2h23 - Distance: 35.93 km

Excursion to the heart of the cognac vineyard
The ultimate stage of the Charente vineyard, you are here in its heart and can fully immerse yourself in it. Between the rows of vines and grape clusters, green dominates the landscape along the Flow Vélo®.

Starting from Châteauneuf, crossing the bridge over the river, the Île de la Fuie on the left of your route is a set of four islets accessible by a footbridge. Take an interest in the history of these ilôts and you will be surprised by their strategic location. Unfortunately, no remains of medieval times are visible, but with a good imagination, one could believe it.

Central point of the stage, Jarnac, is a must! Home town of François Mitterrand, the city dedicated a museum to him dedicated to the presidential gifts received by the Head of State during his two seven years. Take the opportunity to stroll along the Quai de l'Orangerie, lined with cellars that give Jarnac an undeniable charm. The big trading houses are located on the river!

When the route reaches the banks of the river, hang on, you are almost there, the historic center of the city of Cognac is only «a few» pedal strokes away.

Famous worldwide for its exceptional spirits, Cognac is also a city steeped in history. Do not be surprised by the blackened facades of the beautiful bourgeois mansions; they testify to the action of an invisible mushroom feeding on the vapors of alcohol. Proof that cognac stayed here! Discover the old quarter around the castle of Valois: the house of the Lieutenance of the 15th century, the hotel of Rabayne and the hotel of Javrezac of the 16th century are worth the detour!

Le Maine Giraud

The Maine Giraud winery is an elegant manor house set in the middle of vineyards in the rolling Charente countryside. On site are produced Cognac and Pineaux, local Charentais wines but also grape juice and Cognac chocolates.
On the estate that once belonged to Alfred de Vigny, you will feel the poet’s soul everywhere around and everything will remind you that the man of letters was also a good winegrower. The manor is labeled "House of the Illustrious".

Today’s winemakers keep his memory alive by turning their job into an art form and maintaining the beauty of their cellars.

Musée Alfred De Vigny du Maine Giraud

The Maine Giraud was owned by the romantic poet Alfred de Vigny and, by dating some of his poems here, he left his mark indefinitely. This is why, in order to pay homage to him, a permanent museum has been installed in the old dining room of the manor (guided visit).
The small cell where he liked to gather and where he wrote including 'The death of the wolf' is visited too. A literary man, Vigny was none the less a passionate winemaker who produced renowned eaux-de-vies. You can then, in the footsteps of the poet, discover the secrets of the manufacture of brandy, this "liqueur of fire", through a guided tour of the cellars and the distillery followed, if you wish, a tasting of our production (Cognac, Pineaux, Vin de Pays, Grape Juice).
