Saint-Christophe Church

The parish church of St.Christophe is Romanesque and dates from the early 12th century. The building has remained authentic, with the exception of the bell tower, which was remodelled in the 15th century.
Sculptures decorate the façade of the building and recall monsters and animals, taken from our imagination or from everyday life. They can be found mainly on the modillion and capitals of the church.

The interior gives the monument its charm. Sculptures all around the church embellish and enhance the visitor's experience.

The bell was donated in 1850 by the poet Alfred de Vigny, who is its patron. It cracked in 1935 and was recast by the Bolée company in Orléans.

This monument is classified as a "Historical Monument".

Coupe d'Europe de Montgolfières et son meeting aérien : Le Nouvelle Aquitaine Airshow

The European Hot Air Balloon Cup makes thousands of spectators dream every two years in the South Charente.
An internationally renowned event, it is accompanied by the Nouvelle Aquitaine Air Show, an air showcase of French aeronautics!
The best crews will compete in the art of flying... a non-steerable craft! The official competitions will be punctuated by aerial demonstrations, hot air balloon baptisms and shows. A large airshow with vintage aircraft will close the event, as always, on Sunday in Mainfonds.

For 25 years, the European Hot Air Balloon Cup in Charente has attracted nearly 1,500 hot air balloons, great air shows (Christian MOULLEC and his geese, world champions in aerobatics, acrobats on aircraft wings, legendary aircraft and air patrols: Moroccan Patrol and French Patrol) and half a million spectators.

This great event has two parts: (the European Cup and the animation) and involves two different balloon stages:
- The COMPETITION, which tests 40 hot-air balloons, i.e. 40 crews composed of a pilot, a co-pilot, a recuperator and a crew member who helps to install the balloon
- The FIESTA part, which includes 20 hot-air balloons, composed of a pilot and a crew member. These are intended for first flights by partners, sponsors and the public.
The 60 hot-air balloons take off at approximately the same time. The launch sites for the competition are known at the last moment,
while the Fiestas' launch sites are identified in the "Animation and Fiesta" section.

The event ends on Sunday in Mainfonds and during the whole day you will be able to admire the air shows (from 10am), the hot air balloons (from 6pm) with also a cabaret and fireworks in the evening.

The event takes place every 2 years.

Saint-Médard Church of Mainfonds

In contrast to the "classic" churches of Charente, the church of Saint-Médard de Mainfonds has a Greek cross plan. This monument was built in the 12th century.
In the centre of the church, a dome can be seen. The apse, a little further on, forms a half-dome. It is decorated with arcatures and lit by three windows. Above it stands a bell tower, which probably dates from the construction of the church.

Château de Lussaud

LUSSAUD CASTLE

(or from LUPSAULT "The Wolf Forest"

Built in the 15th century, it was successively the property of three families of magistrates and squires.
Pierre PASCAULT lord of LUPSAULT, magistrate, Mayor of Angoulême in 1534, was a powerful and feared character, his coat of arms included three skulls and bones.

His daughter, Marie, married Robert de CORLIEU, lawyer and King's prosecutor at the Présidial d'Angoumois; their son Pierre de CORLIEU, squire, lord of LUSSAUD was a deputy to the Court of King Henry III to settle the affairs of his province, he served under Marshal de MONTLUC during the wars of religion, was appointed Captain of the castle guards of Blanzac by the King in 1586.

At that time the castle of LUSSAUD was a stronghold, the arquebusesières are still visible.

Throughout the old regime the property extended over three communes: Champagne, Blanzac and Pérignac; the LUSSAUD mill generated substantial resources for the lords.

Jean-Charles CLAVAUD, owner of the Château de LUSSAUD throughout the first half of the 19th century, is a notable, mayor of Champagne, he gives friendly advice to the owners of Maine-Giraud (neighboring property), Chanoinesse Sophie de BARAUDIN (aunt), then Madame Marie-Jeanne de VIGNY mother of the famous poet. Finally he became the friend of Alfred de VIGNY, and this illustrious character liked to cross "the beautiful woods of Lussaud" which led him from his estate to the Château de Lussaud. Nature lover, he draws his inspiration there to write "the death of the wolf". This faithful friendship towards the CLAVAUD family, Alfred de VIGNY kept it until his death.

Numerous and interesting companion stone engravings are preserved, an 18th century bread oven, 15th and 18th century fireplaces are inside the house, flanked by five round towers, overlooking the Charente countryside.

An exhibition of photographs on the evolution of the restoration work of the castle,

and on Alfred de VIGNY and his friendly ties with the CLAVAUD family.
