Nouaillé 1356 – Batailles et Destinées (Battles and Destinies) (evening show)

In Poitou on 19 September 1356, the King of France and his army were defeated by English troops led by the Back Prince. This episode of the Hundred Years’ War marks memories today, as it is remembered through medieval banquets and shows in Nouaillé-Maupertuis, a few kilometres south of Poitiers.

Nouaillé is a town which developed during the 12th century around a former priory which had become an abbey in the 9th century. Today, you can still admire the fortifications of this outstanding site, the Abbey Dwellings, part of the monastic buildings and the Church of Saint-Juinien. So, now the scene’s set: let the show, performed by over 250 volunteers, begin!

Nouaillé 1356 – Batailles et Destinées (spectacle nocturne)

Batailles et Destinées (Battles and Destinies) recounts the story of a group of tight-knit siblings, albeit that the four of them had highly-different personalities and passions. Whereas the eldest immersed himself in tricks and nonsense and followed Matifas and his strolling players, his sister dreamt of fighting alongside Du Guesclin, brandishing a sword. The youngest sister of the family wanted the estate to thrive whilst her brother found his path in inventions and discoveries.
Will their quest be successful? Their journey – and yours this evening! is definitely going to be a rocky ride but the Black Dog of Brocéliande”, the famous Du Guesclin and Matifas, the legendary magician, are by their sides and turn out to be precious allies in this 14th-century world, which you have been whisked back to for a few hours…

Enchanted by the site? Well, why not come back again on 29 and 30 June for Nouaillé-Maupertuis’ night-time market and medieval celebrations. Enjoy minstrels’ music, meet a host of master craftspeople and producers, stroll amongst singers, dancers, storytellers, under the protective eye of soldiers, archers and horsemen, and finish off this timeless interlude under the dancing flames of fire-eaters and fire-performers, or whilst becoming acquainted with the Witch of Maupertuis!
