Ile de Ré is my top kite-surfing playground.

Hugo Guias is a professional kite-boarder. His family has roots on the Ile de Ré, and he moved there when he was still very young. Today, he has formed a special attachment to the place he calls home, a place of land and sea. Here, he tells us about it in his own words.

The Ile de Ré has always been my playground. Even though I was born in Paris, my family is from here and I’ve known the island all my life. When I was 14, I told my parents that I wanted to leave Paris and live on the island. In the end they agreed, seeing that I wasn’t fulfilling my potential there.

I was already into sailing and windsurfing, but when I was in high school I discovered kite-surfing and set my mind on becoming one of the best in the world. I travelled to Brazil for work, and even though it was hard to achieve my goal I did so, and found myself among France’s best in the sport.

There’s always somewhere to go

I moved back to the Ile de Ré because I’m incredibly attached to the place. And there’s more than just kite-surfing! I do skateboard, surfing, windsurfing... The best thing about the island is that there is always somewhere to go, whichever direction the wind is blowing. If you like surfing, there are good spots for beginners and seasoned surfers alike.

I don’t spend all year on the Ile de Ré: I’m lucky enough to live in a region with bags of potential for water sports! I also love La Palmyre, for example.

But I always come back to the Ile de Ré, where once my day’s kite-surfing is done, I can do a bit of skateboarding before enjoying the sunset with my friends from the terrace of a bar. It’s hard to find better...

Yves Marsh National Nature Reserve

The Yves Marsh Nature Reserve is a site where it is particularly easy to approach nature.
Guided tours are offered all year round to discover birds, plants, insects and landscapes of rare beauty.
Muddy foreshore, dry dunes and pannes, marshes and reedbeds, wet meadows, tamarisk hedges, copses and thickets... A beautiful mosaic of environments has been created. On this small corner of the coast, it is home to a multitude of animal and plant species, some of which are very rare.
This area was still underwater in Roman times. Clayey sediments, dune strips and pebbles cut it off from the ocean for good around the year 1000.
Man was quick to exploit the sand. This led to the creation of ditches and depressions. The water table, which has since come to the surface, has created freshwater areas that complement the brackish lagoon, which is sometimes still flooded by storms.
