Abbaye de St Savin

Abbey of Saint-Savin, masterpiece of the Valley of Frescoes

45 km to the east of Poitiers, the abbey church of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe is an architectural gem often referred to as “the Sistine Chapel of the Roman period”. The first thing that strikes is its sheer size, 42 metres long and 17 metres wide. The nave creates an instant impression of light and space.

Lift your eyes to take in the real treasure of this remarkable building. Over 400m2 of ceiling covered with frescoes painted in the 11th and 12th centuries, a picture book of bible scenes 17 metres above ground.

A monumental work inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.
