Église Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand

A stopover on the way to Compostela since the 12th century, the church of Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand is located south of Poitiers, not far from the Parc de Blossac. Rebuilt in the 19th century, it retains the original massive pillars in the nave, a choir and an ambulatory from the Romanesque period. It stands on the presumed site of the tomb of Saint-Hilaire, the first bishop of Poitiers.

After admiring its four-apse chevet, you enter to discover its choir and its Romanesque transept of impressive height and great luminosity. You linger in its four chapels decorated with Romanesque wall paintings (11th century) representing a scene from the Apocalypse. And to learn more about Saint-Hilaire, you look at the capital dedicated to his death and the small crypt called confession, which houses his relics.

Poitiers, Ville d'Art et d'Histoire

Poitiers, an ancient fortified city, sits on a rocky spur. Several towers testify today to this rich medieval past. Surrounded by two rivers and as many green valleys, the historic center is locally nicknamed "the plateau". At the top of this vast promontory stand two of its most beautiful monuments, the palace of the Counts of Poitou and the church of Notre-Dame-la-Grande. Along the narrow streets, mansions from the Renaissance period mingle with timber-framed houses from the Middle Ages. The prefecture and the town hall are evidence of the Haussmannian style of the 19th century.

As for the two glass parallelepipeds that you can see, shining with a thousand yellows, on the west side, they house the shows of the Théâtre Auditorium de Poitiers (TAP) all year round. The city known as "the city of a hundred steeples" is erudite, cultural, festive, and a place for the arts

Musée Sainte-Croix

At the Musée Sainte-Croix in Poitiers, follow a panorama of regional archaeology. Beautiful paleolithic engravings in the Grotte de la Marche represent prehistory. Then the visitor enters the city of the Pictons of Gallo-Roman antiquity under the protective gaze of Athena, a marble statue of the 1st century AD. He discovers sculpted sarcophagi from Late Antiquity and the High Middle Ages, and a beautiful series of sculptures reminds him of the extraordinary influence of the Roman workshops in Poitou.

The fine arts course is based on painted and sculpted works from the 14th to the middle of the 20th century. The great artistic currents of the 19th century, neoclassicism, orientalism, ingrism, symbolism, invite you to the works of Camille Claudel. The beginning of the 20th century is brilliantly illustrated by modern art with great artists such as Bonnard, Sisley, ...

Église Notre-Dame-la-Grande

Jewel of the city of Poitiers, Notre-Dame-la-Grande is a collegiate church of the 11th century. Inside, you will discover the paintings with Romanesque-Byzantine motifs of the nave, the frescoes of the choir and the crypt (12th century), the side chapels of the 15th and 16th centuries, including that of Yvon du Fou, grand seneschal of Poitou, and the statue of Notre-Dame-des-Clés, a reference of the legend of the miracle of the keys.

The reputation of Notre-Dame-la-Grande comes from its remarkable facade of the 12th century, meticulously sculpted, the most perfect form of Romanesque architecture in Poitou. It reads like a picture book and shares great episodes from the Bible and the Gospels, such as the Temptation of Adam and Eve or the Nativity. Every evening at 10:30 pm in summer and during the Christmas vacations at 6 pm, the Polychromies come to highlight the pages of this story.
