In an emergency
If you are involved in, or witness, an accident, here are the emergency numbers to use:
- European emergency services number: 112
- SAMU (medical emergencies): 15
- Police emergency number: 17
- Fire service: 18
- Emergency services number for hearing-impaired callers: 114
Whichever number you call, you will always need to tell the operator:
- who you are (give your name and phone number)
- where you are (address and precise location)
- the reason for your call
Other useful numbers
If you lose:
- your ID or other official documentation: report your loss at the nearest police station (which will give you a receipt) and ask your consulate for advice
- your keys or other property: ask at the police station for the phone number of the lost property service. If you think your loss occurred on a train, call 08188.8.131.52 If you think your loss occurred in an airport, report it to the airport police within 15 days
- your car: report it at a police station, which your loss will be recorded. If your vehicle was illegally parked and has been removed by the police services, then the police will direct you to the car pound.
- your credit card: block your card as quickly as possible after noticing its loss, and then report the loss to a police station. Card blocking centre phone number: 0.892.705.705, or +33.4184.108.40.2063 from outside France.
- a pet: contact the SPA (Society for the Protection of Animals) on: +33(0)220.127.116.11.66.
In the event of trouble
If you become involved in a dispute with a retailer, restaurant or hotel, you should contact the Departmental Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention office (DGCCRF) for the department in which the dispute arose.
Regardless of circumstances, the embassy or consulate representing your country in France may be able to assist.
