In the heart of the small town of Civray in the south of the Vienne department, Saint Nicolas church is worth a visit for its facade and murals.
Built in the 12th century, its rectangular, round stone façade is unique in the Poitou region. The many sculptures depict a variety of themes: the battle of vices and virtues, Saint-Nicolas saving three young girls...
Inside, you'll be surprised by the colorful 19th-century decor on the church walls. Only the frescoes on the right side of the transept are older: 13th and 14th centuries.
The church has been listed since 1840.
Until September 30, 2024: Temporary closure of the church interior, but the exterior is well worth a visit!
