In the time of the knights...
Villebois-Lavalette, capital of the Cornuelle biscuit, is a charming village on the Charente-Dordogne border. When you arrive, you'll see its imposing medieval castle towering over the village from the top of its rocky spur.
The old 12th-century market halls, rebuilt in 1665, are still the centre of the village today and are home to the shopkeepers' terraces and the Saturday morning market. It's a great place to stop and enjoy the gentle village lifestyle.
Don't leave without trying a cornuelle, the village's signature biscuit. The bakeries in the main street sell them all year round - a guaranteed treat!
When you come to Villebois-Lavalette, take the time to visit the medieval castle with the guides from the association de sauvegarde du patrimoine. Stop off at Place des Halles and admire the fountain and old sundial. Finally, take a stroll down the tiny alleyways on either side of the square to discover their hidden charms.
