The town of Barbezieux in southern Charente boasts a rich heritage of buildings, the jewel in the crown of which is undoubtedly its château. The church of Saint-Mathias, in front of which the Tuesday and Friday morning market is held, is also part of this heritage.
But that's not all: the town centre is packed with mansions and remarkable 18th-century houses.

With its 5,000 inhabitants, Barbezieux is the largest commune in the southern Charente. Its many shops, restaurants, hotels, schools, health professionals, music academy, swimming pool, theatre and other sports and cultural facilities make it an attractive and dynamic town.
It has been designated a ‘stopover village’, offering a wide range of services to travellers on the N10, which passes close to the town.
Barbezieux has also been awarded the ‘Ville et Métiers d'art’ label. Among the exceptional skills on offer in the surrounding area are Renoux cutlery, winner of the ‘meilleur ouvrier de France’ award, ‘D'or et de perles’, a gold-thread embroiderer ranked among the top 3 in France, and Mr Fauvin, from the Pétignac music estate, a world-renowned piano tuner, restorer and seller. These are just some of the skills being developed at the Barbezieux trades campus, where more than 300 apprentices are trained each year in the culinary, service and art trades.
