In 1085, a certain Archambaud III, Viscount of Comborn, founded the monastery of Meymac as a result of his unworthy behavior. At first, it was a priory dependent on the abbey of Uzerche. But following the intrigue of a monk (prior Hugues de Besse in 1145) who, on his own authority, wanted to turn the priory into an abbey (often a convent of Benedictine rule) and take over its management, there were long and sometimes heated discussions between the cloister of Uzerche and that of Meymac. The monk eventually gave in, but the title of abbey remained (1146).
Until 1824, the abbey was under threat, but was saved by Prosper Mérimée?s classification as a Monument Historique in 1840, and work campaigns from 1846 onwards contributed to its complete renovation.
The monastery was subsequently sold in lots. Today, the east wing houses the Fondation Vazeilles, and the west wing
