The Templar village of Sergeac along the left bank of the Vézère River in the Dordogne, the prehistoric site of Castel-Merle includes ten remarkable rock shelters which were occupied by Neanderthal 85,000 years ago and Cro-Magnon 35,000 years ago. This concentration of deposits, located halfway between the Lascaux caves and Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, is one of the most largest in the world. In 2012, the site of Castel-Merle came into the spotlight when American researchers announced that they were able to precisely date an engraved stone block to 37,000 years before the present day. This means that Castel-Merle is home to one of the oldest forms of cave art in Europe and perhaps even the world. Between Les Eyzies and Montignac, the cliff of the Roque Saint-Christophe rises steeply above the Vézère River. This kilometre-long, 80-metre-high limestone cliff has been sculpted with under-rock shelters and long aerial terraces with impressive overhangs, occupied by man in prehistoric times (55,000 years ago),then modified to become a fort and a city in the Middle Ages, and inhabited until the early Renaissance.

Few troglodytic sites can rival the Roque Saint-Christophe in terms of age and surface area. Discover the lives and dwellings of our ancestors, the 15th century city and a collection of medieval lifting machines. Highlights of the visit: the arrival on the Grande Terrasse, offering an exceptional view of the Vézère valley, and prehistory workshops open to all (painting, fire lighting, flint knapping...).

With your family or with your friends take advantage of 2h of riding on rail bikes on an old train track. It's an 11km track full of charm with bridges, a viaduct or a tunnel following the path and stations inbetween valleys and water currents. On the way there it goes uphill and on the way back downhill! If you can't or cannot do any effort, rail bike with electrical assistance are at disposal. Half-way you can get refreshements and amenities. The start is at fixe hours, you must reserve your ticket (2 others tracks 14km long available depending on the season).

6km from Eyzies on the Montignac-Lascaux route, Préhisto-Parc is a prehistory interpretation centre covering an area of 5 ha. You will see large-scale scenes of the daily life of Neanderthal man up to the time of Cro-Magnon man, with sound effects, very scientifically designed with the Human Paleontology Institute based on the latest research.

Men chasing mammoths or cutting up a reindeer, family around their home; you will get an insight into the way of life, knowledge and customs of our ancestors. Your visit becomes even more accurate with activities, particularly evening activities in summer, demonstrations of flint carving and fire-making, and the opportunity to try shooting.

The Museum houses military souvenirs brought back soldiers of the Perigord during their campaigns, either used in their daily life or merited in combat in the regiments they served in. More than 1200 objects, all of them remarkable, rare or picturesque which will help you to relive the daily life of our soldiers from the Middle Ages to the present. Non-profit making since 18 January 1911 and recognised as a public service since 29 January 1928.

Unique in France. The remains of a richly endowed Gallo-Roman residence are housed in a modern building designed by the architect Jean Nouvel. The collections from Antiquity are exhibited to their best advantage. A vast umbrella-like structure floats over the walls of the “Domus de Vesunna” protecting it. A themed trail explains “the town and public life” and “domestic and private life”.
A spectacular view opens onto the remains from the mezzanine level. Beyond the glass curtain walling, the rustic park and gardens surrounding the Vesunna Tower and remains of the town ramparts are revealed.

A few kilometres from Terrasson, on the edge of the woods and on the banks of the river, Hautegente Manor, whose buildings date from the 13th century, is, at first glance, a magical place, a little out of time.
It has belonged to the Hamelin family for more than 400 years and it was Edith who, in the 1980s, started to offer bed and breakfast accommodation for passing visitors.
Her son Patrick, and his wife Marie Josée, continue this tradition of hospitality in this serene setting.

All the geese raised and force-fed on the farm are canned on site and sold exclusively in our shop or sent by us via our online shop.
