Fêtes de Bayonne (Bayonne Festival)

Among the biggest celebrations in the South-West, the Fêtes de Bayonne (Bayonne Festival) leads the way with over a million “Festayres” (festival-goers) in the Basque capital every year at the end of July. It’s the Town Hall which says so: Bayonne wouldn’t be Bayonne with its famous Fêtes. Since 1932, for four days and five nights, the town welcomes people of all ages from around the world, dressed up appropriately in the event’s attire: white trousers and shirt, red scarf and “cinta” (belt). The crowd, dressed like this, is an impressive spectacle itself!

Courses de vaches

From bull running to mutxikos (Basque dancing) and public dances, from the corso (grand parade with floats), to bullfighting and to mascleta (pyrotechnics), from children’s day to fast-paced evenings where everyone parties in the streets, the bodegas and other peñas (places with live music), the Fêtes de Bayonne are a summertime must in France, which profoundly illustrate Basque cultural identity.
