This Roman Catholic church was built in the second half of the 12th century. Inside, a 15th-century mural depicts St. Louis (Louis IX, King of France, protector of the poor and sick) and St. Apolline.
It consists of three parts: the nave with transept, the apse and the apses. The whole building was raised by one floor and consolidated in the 14th century to protect it from attacks during the Hundred Years' War. Gothic buttresses on the sides of the church still bear witness to this period.
The church takes its name from the ancient fountain of Berneuil (the Fountain of Our Lady) whose miraculous properties were used to cure eye diseases. The remains of a mermaid pointing the way from the fountain to the pilgrims can still be seen on the south-western façade of the building.
Guided tours are organised on request by contacting Mr Jean Marie Arsicault.
