Belvès, l'un des Plus Beaux Villages de France

35 km south-west of Sarlat, Belvès is one of the most beautiful villages in France and the Black Perigord. At the top of a hill, the 11th century castrum is still very visible today with a town gate, the Auditeur tower (former keep) and the bell-tower-porch (15th century). The archbishop of Bordeaux was the temporal lord of the place for more than 500 years. The history is however eventful, between France and England, plague epidemics, ..
The heritage of Belvès is important: troglodytic dwellings occupied from the 13th to the 18th centuries, the Château de Belvès (16th century), the church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption or Notre-Dame de Montcuq (13th century), the 15th-century market hall enlarged in the 16th century, a neo-gothic-style house built in 1882, the Consuls' house and the Tour des Filhols (11th century) in which the tourist office is located today.
