Why you should visit Vassivière lake...

One of the largest man-made lakes in France is in the north-west of the Millevaches Regional Nature Reserve, just an hour away from Limoges. It’s the perfect destination for peace and quiet, excitement, entertainment and a natural basin in which the natural world is conserved and protected. Here are 4 good reasons why you should get away from it all here.
1. For its Canadian feel

With its forested landscapes, islands and peninsulas, you could almost believe you’re on the other side of the Atlantic! Whether walking, biking or sailing, the lakeside trail runs for nearly 30 km, taking you deep into the natural world and tranquillity of this special place.

2. For its contemporary art centre

At Vassivière, art and culture come together in the exhibitions hosted by the International Centre of Art and the Landscape. The artists whose work is showcased here all take their inspiration from the land. Around 60 pieces are exhibited here, not only on the walls of the International Centre of Art and the Landscape, but also outdoors, making this an essential part of Limousin cultural life.

3. For its water sports

With 1,000 hectares of water, beaches and harbours, Vassivière is also coastal resort! There is a sailing school offering lessons in kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, windsurfing, wake boarding, water skiing... and many other sports! The calm waters of the lake are also an open invitation to swimmers.

4. For its fun and fantasy

With sport, culture and exhibitions, you’ll find that Vassivière Lake also hosts many events.

La Déjantée is one of its most high-profile sports events. This publicly accessible obstacle course encourages individuals to excel and help each other. Vassivière also hosts the French Wild Swimming Cup and the Régate de la Porcelaine sailing regatta, among many other events.

Neither should you miss the many festivals held here: the Festival des Bobines Rebelles (June), the Festival Destination Ailleurs on Vassivière Island (July/August), the Festival Folie Les Mots and the ‘Paroles de Conteurs’ Vassivière intercultural story festival (August).
