Lascaux IV - Centre International de l'Art Pariétal

Lascaux Cave in the Périgord Noir is a masterpiece of prehistoric art with frescoes showing around 600 animals (horses, bulls, deer, felines, etc.) and enigmatic signs. Today, the site can be rediscovered at the International Centre for Cave Art, a complex of more than 8,000 m² at the foot of Lascaux hill.
This exceptional place includes a complete and unprecedented replica of the cave and 6 exhibition halls retracing the discovery of Lascaux, its place in world cave art and contemporary creativity. This is an immersive experience at the heart of prehistory, thanks in particular to the technological prowess of both the building and visitor aids (augmented reality, 3D screen, etc). A moving and sensory experience guaranteed!
Bonus: a rich and original cultural programme and a new exhibition.

Lascaux II

The first facsimile of Lascaux is located in Montignac on the Unesco protected hill, a few metres from the original cave. It is an exact replica of the Hall of the Bulls and the Axial Diverticulum, which represents 90% of the paintings in the famous cave. As you leave the light of day for the world of darkness, you will have the sensation of walking through the original cave. Throughout the visit, the guide will try to recreate the emotion of the discovery and will introduce you to the intimate and universal art of Lascaux.

Château de Losse

5 Km from Montignac Lascaux on D 706. The Medieval stronghold towers above the river Vézère. Within its curtain walls and deep moat a Renaissance hall was built in 1576. It is accessed by a monumental gatehouse where an inscription proclaims, in the line of 16th century thought, « Man does as he may, Fate as she wills ».

Inside the Renaissance hall a fine decor and exceptional period furniture bear witness to the grand lifestyle of Jean II de Losse, soldier and courtier of all the sons of Catherine de Medicis, the last Valois kings. The gardens within the walls or terraced over the river with plantations following the 16th century lay out, offer an inspired and charming wandering with unspoiled views over the virgilian coutryside. (« A » listed building, site and gardens.)

English tours available for groups on request.

Les Jardins du château de Losse

5km from Montignac and a stone’s throw from Thot – Espace Cro-magnon, The gardens of Losse Castle overlook the Vézère. Built on a terrace and labelled “Remarkable Gardens”, they provide a beautiful setting, surrounding the Renaissance château since the 16th century. You are completely at leisure to stroll around the gardens and park and enjoy the exhibitions organised in the towers.
Your stroll will lead you to the “green rooms”, created on terraces with a view over the Vézère. Follow the wisteria arbour to re-join the walkway lined with boxwoods and decorated with roses. In the garden below, rosemary sits alongside lavender while a little stream runs through the topiaries with a variety of aromas. Re-join the park by crossing the dry moat; your children can play in the mini-maze of the bamboo garden. In the stables, a video tells you more about Losse château and its gardens.

Village de Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère

25km north of Sarlat between Les Eyzies and Lascaux, Saint Léon sur Vézère lies, as its name suggests, in a bend in the Vézère river.
Classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, the village has the charming medieval heritage of the Périgord Noir.
A maze of couredoux (narrow streets), white stone houses with warm stone roofs and monuments which give it character.
Among them,
-Saint Léonce Roman church from the 12th century, listed as an historic monument which hosts concerts for the Périgord Noir Music Festival in summer
-the 16th century Clérans Château in a park planted with hundred year old trees
-the Manoir de la Salle built in the 14th century
-the 16th century expiatory chapel with its 13th century recesses
The town also has three prehistoric deposits, Sous le Roc, le Moustier and la Rochette.
