Dating from 1941-43, the base is one of five built by the Germans on the Atlantic coast for U-boats during the Second World War. This gigantic bunker is a veritable honeycomb with eleven alveolus linked by an inner street.
Today, a part of the building is accessible to the public and includes :
- a space for temporary exhibitions dedicated to contemporary creation
- a space dedicated to the Bassins des lumières, digital art center
Created by Culturespaces in the Bordeaux submarine base, the Bassins de Lumières presents immersive digital exhibitions devoted to the major artists in the history of art and contemporary art. The art centre offers visitors high-quality visual and audio experiences. The four basins cover a surface area of 13,000sqm; these areas are 12 metres high, 110 metres long, and 22 metres wide. With 12,450sqm of projection surface, this is the largest fixed multimedia installation in the world.
